Brighton Peace and Environment Centre
After an energising AGM in October BPEC has entered the year of its 25th anniversary full of ideas and activities. There are some new faces on the management committee - see inside to find out more...
Eowyn and Adam have worked very hard to compile the 2007 version of “The Green Pages”, which were officially launched on Monday 5th February. More listings, clearer categories and a new, professional design illustrate the continuing progression from the first edition. “The Green Pages” will be widely available in the City and at BPEC and will even go ‘online’ in the forthcoming months. I want to take this opportunity to thank Eowyn and Adam for their fabulous work!
From our humble origins as a CND spin off, through our Kensington Garden youth, BPEC has grown up. Our stature as an active peace and environment education resource centre has risen. Our voice is clearly heard. Education and development is fundamental to a greener fairer world and 2007 will see an increase in local projects with a global impact. This year we hope to establish our charity status, raise our public profile and increase our membership. We are all on the cusp of great change. Let?s make it a positive year to take us through the next 25! And keep an eye out for our special birthday
“If the UK envisages another 50 years of British security being based on threatening other populations with mass destruction then we encourage other states to do the same and thus paradoxically we increase our security risk rather than decrease it.” (Kofi Anan, former UN Secretary-General)
Trident is the UK’s nuclear weapons system. The UK stockpiles around 200 operational nuclear warheads. These launch from US Trident missiles on four submarines. Each warhead has around eight times the explosive power of the Hiroshima bomb which killed over 200,000 people.
BPEC’s AGM was held in December to determine our direction and
future, to share information about current projects and to elect Officers
and the Management Committee. Here are a few introductions...
Chair
- Merlin Mathews – Merlin set up Re-cycle, a charity involved in
shipping used bicycles to Africa. He has lived in Brighton for two years and was chair of BPEC throughout 2006. Merlin is based at the Eco-Centre and he is keen to continue moving BPEC on to a firmer footing.
Vice Chair – Stacia Staunton – Stacia was the BPEC co-ordinator for six months from autumn 05 to spring 06; she now works for the Environment Agency and is eager to stay involved with BPEC and its management.
