Brighton Peace and Environment Centre

Newsletter Winter 2006

From the editor

Since the last edition a few personnel changes have taken place at BPEC. Stacia has taken a position with the Environment Agency, and joined the BPEC Management Committee, whilst I have taken over the role of Centre Coordinator. A few of you may know me from my two-year involvement as a BPEC volunteer and Co-ordinator of the Fundraising Group. I have always enjoyed working here and see this position as a wonderful opportunity to further our role as a valuable resource for Brighton & Hove. Talking of which, what have we been up to lately? June saw us start our 3rd Age @ BPEC workshops and the programme has been a great success.

Time to go Green

BPEC has received some funding from the Local Network Fund to help in raising environmental awareness amongst local primary school children. Through interactive workshops and practical activities, the “Go Green!” project will cover many issues such as water, energy, waste and food in a bid to encourage young people to do their part in combating climate change.

Taking place at after-school clubs for children aged 9-11, the project will work with three primary schools in the East Brighton area.

People living in East Brighton area at higher risk of deprivation than in other areas of the city. As the Council’s own socio-economic report states, “whilst 37% of East Brighton residents live in income deprived households, 62% of children in East Brighton ward do so.” Children are especially affected by such deprivation and may lack access to the knowledge needed to act in more sustainable ways.

Volunteer focus: Len Goldman

And there’s no better place to start than with one of BPEC’s longest serving volunteers, Len Goldman, who recently celebrated his
90th Birthday.

As it would be impossible to even attempt to fit all of Len’s many well-lived years into one small article, we’ll just take a look at his time with BPEC. Should you wish to find out more about Len’s life, his travels and his activism, you can always dip into his
fascinating three-volume autobiography, available from the BPEC centre - or drop in on a Tuesday afternoon and have a chat
and a cuppa with the man himself (it’s well worth it!).

News from the chair

Hello again!

I’m delighted to report that the push towards developing the organisation is going well on all fronts, helped by the new Centre Coordinator, Mareike, whom I thank. We’ve had some productive strategy days; check out the website for details.

Our pro-bono (free) solicitors have suggested we become a charity/company. This will hopefully be ratified at the next AGM on 6th December. The evening will feature a workshop on Sustainable living at 6.30pm, the AGM at 7.30pm and our Xmas party from 9pm - so please bring along food and drink to share! Please put the date in your diaries and we’ll be in touch with details of the location nearer the time.
