Silver has long been valued for its versatility. It’s a naturally occurring
element – a precious metal used for photography, jewellery, coins, mirrors, dentistry, electrical and electronic products, catalysts in chemical manufacturing and as an antibacterial. It’s slightly harder than gold yet still ductile and malleable. Silver is unique in its ability to react to light and has no adverse effect on humans unless consumed in large quantities. Apparently we all have trace amounts in our bodies as our intake is approximately between 70 and 88 micrograms of silver per day – half from our diet - but over 99% is readily excreted.
Fair trade is a social movement which promotes standards for international labour, environmentalism, and social policy in areas related to the production of Fairtrade labelled and unlabelled goods.
Fair Trade has grown over the last few years; and many fair trade products such as coffee and chocolate have become more widely available. Yet, this movement based on consumer trust is in danger of being seriously undermined.
A very successful day of workshops was held at Coombe Road Primary School in Brighton on Wednesday 22nd March, linking in with the children's work on Fairtrade.
An assembly for the whole school highlighted the problems faced by producers in the developing world who have to contend with unfair trading practices. A display of fair trade products and a 'shopping bag' gave the children an idea of the choices they could make when shopping.
