Education Project Update

An update from Mandy Curtis, BPEC Education team

So much has happened with our education projects over the last six months or so, all very exciting for the team. We have been finishing our teacher training project which has been generously supported by DfID (Depart for International Development).

Four schools this term will receive training on how teachers can deliver global citizenship as global advocates. We have found it very interesting to see the impact on the school when training a whole team rather than an individual teacher. To develop this further, we are part of the regional consortium, LaSER-GD (London and South East Regions Global Dimension -see (External) http://www.local4global.org.uk ), who are funding our work with Cottesmore St Mary’s School, Hove and Elm Grove School, Brighton. These two schools are our pilot partners in developing Global Schools. They have already taken part in training and we will be looking at curriculum planning (a literacy focus in Year 1), school policies and development plans.

This work builds on our successful storytelling festival which involved six schools in Brighton and Hove. Storytellers went into school and captivated the children and staff alike with stories and songs from around the world. Follow up with their teachers helped children to see the similarities in stories that children share.

We have also received funding from Oxfam to support our work on lending resources to schools, including teaching packs, books and artefacts. We are currently putting together several themed collections with supporting advice for teachers on subjects including tying together sustainability with India and technology with toys. Oxfam and LaSER are also funding our new work programme with local universities, assessing the provision of global dimension within the education departments and helping to identify opportunities to deliver a global curriculum.
