Our supermarkets don’t sell GM food and 18.5 million of us live in self-declared GM-free zones. But the big biotech companies still want to grow their crops here. They are trying to sneak GM into our food and farming - by getting the Government to legalise GM contamination of conventional and organic crops.
The Government consultation for England on Genetic modified contamination (or 'coexistence') has finally been launched and the deadline for responses is 20 October. Friends of the Earth has launched a website (External) www.stopgmcontamination.org. where you can find a step-by-step guide to responding to the consultation and an easy email action for people with less time.
What does the consultation say?
The proposals are weak – the Government is planning to allow widespread GM contamination of conventional and possibly even organic crops, paving the way for biotech companies to get their crops grown. Friends of the Earth and GM Freeze believe that instead the Government should take action to keep our food, farming and environment GM free.
